Let's Catch a Leprechaun!

Are you tired of pesky Leprechauns sneaking around your house? Every year, I have to clean up Leprechaun foot prints in my kitchen, so this year, we are going to fight back. My girls are going to set up Leprechaun traps and try to catch the little bugger! If you'd like to trap your leprechaun, be sure to take a peek at the traps on the links below. You are invited to create a Leprechaun trap with your child, post photos, and come back here to share!

Welcome to Our Igloo!

After working 50 hours of overtime shoveling snow, plowing, and salting, the last thing I thought my husband would be doing is building an igloo with our two girls. Well, that is exactly what he did- what a guy! Here is a peek at their awesome creation.
Abby is inside digging out the middle of the igloo.

As an extension to their creative snow play, I thought it would be fun to teach the girls more about igloos and the Inuit people of from the North. Also, I think it would be neat to build a more realistic igloo, so I did a little research. Enjoy the links that I found.

Book Review: Oscar and Olive Osprey

Oscar and Olive Osprey: A Family Takes Flight, by Janie Suss, is the true story of two ospreys that build a nest in front of the author's Chesapeake Bay home. It is written in a way that is both enjoyable for adults and children. My daughters were intrigued by the story and asked me to continue reading as I finished each chapter. The very first evening, we completed seven chapters. Even my husband sat with us to hear more about the adventures of Oscar and Olive and their offspring. It was wonderful to spend time as a family reading about this very special raptor family. The girls couldn't wait to hear about the new babies and were anxious to see photos of Olivia and Odie. It was neat to parallel this family with our own real-life experience. As we read about the ospreys preparing their nest as they waited for their offspring, we were preparing our "nest" as we waited for our new baby to be born.

When I first received the book in the mail and unwrapped it, I was slightly disappointed. Based on the appearance of the cover,I thought that it was a non-fiction book for adults and that my children wouldn't enjoy it. As I started reading the first chapter, I was pleasantly surprised. I recommend this book to parents, nature lovers, and teachers. It would make a great read-a-loud for the classroom or as a supplement to a Science unit. There are over 50 colorful illustrations throughout the book. At the end of the book, you will find fun facts, suggestions for book discussions, and a section titled Activities, Research, and Getting Involved.

Tooth Fairy Deals and Theories

A few days ago, Peanut lost her first tooth. How excited was she? Well, there were screams coming from the living room- loud, happy screams of joy!

As she prepared that evening for the tooth fairy, she realized that she wasn't ready to give up her tooth. So she asked me to compose a letter to the tooth fairy asking her if she'd like to take a seashell from her collection in exchange for her tooth- that she'd like her tooth and money. Funny! The next day, she was thrilled that the tooth fairy compromised. Listening to the kid's theories about the tooth fairy was a hoot as well.

Peanut: How does the tooth fairy get in?
Sunshine: Through the chimney.

Has the tooth fairy visited your house? Speaking of the tooth fairy, has anyone seen the movie yet and if so did you enjoy it?

Take Care!
